Study of the wills and inventories of sequestered clergy from two counties, Leicestershire and Wiltshire, and a wider sample of earlier non-PCC probate records (Tables 5.4 and 5.5) suggest that sequestered clergy who died during or soon after the Restoration, probably died in meaner circumstances than if they had they kept their livings. But for richer clergy, particularly wealthy scions of Wiltshire gentry like William Grove, Frederick Vaughan, and Edmund Proby, their ability to supplement clerical incomes via property ownership and farming activities became crucial in allowing them to ride out their time in the ecclesiastical wilderness. At the other end of the scale, those in poor livings, which abounded in Leicestershire, and those without temporal estates, often died relatively poor.167 A few, dying before or soon after the Restoration, made wills or inventories hinting at real destitution, like Leicestershire incumbent Gervase Clifton, who owned only a few shillings worth of old books and clothes, and the rector of Draycot Cerne in Wiltshire, John Rand, who in 1652 left cash bequests of only seven shillings to his children.168
